Microorganisms associated with the urinogenital system of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) patients in north western Nigeria.
Abstract
Escherichia coli (Migula 1895) Caslellani & Chalmens 1919, Enterobater cloacae (Jordan 1890) Hormaeche & Edwards 1960, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Schroeter 1872) Migula 1900, Candida albicans Berkhout 1923, Corynebacterium diphtheriae (Kruse 1886) Lehmann & Neumann 1896, Klebsiella pneumoniae (Schroeter 1886) Trevisan 1887, Proteus vulgaris Hauser 1885 and several species of Cirobacter. The bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheria had the highest colony forming units (49x104) while Candida albicans had the lowest (12x104). High incidence (71%) of microbial colonization in VVF patients was observed in the younger age group of 15-20 yr than in the older age groups. Mother-in-laws ranked high (35%) in VVF complications while self delivery (16 %) was least risky.
