Abstract

Betulinic acid (BA) is a triterpene that has been identified and isolated from different plants species. It exerts a number of biological activities that includes anti-ulcer, anti-retroviral, anti-tumor, and anti-microbial properties. This study was undertaken to investigate the antiulcer and anti-inflammatory properties of BA. The results showed dose dependent percentage inhibition in indomethacin induced ulcer scores in the treated animals that were significant at doses 1.5mg/kg and 3.0mg/kg (p < 0.05).  Betulinic acid also produced a significant decrease and dose dependent inhibition of the paw oedema formation (p < 0.05) as well as change in oedema inhibition.
