Quantitative Estimation of Vitamin C in Some Local Fruits

Abstract

Four locally available and non-seasonal fruits namely: Adansonia digitata L. (A). Ziziphus jujuba L. (B). Dialium guineense W. (C). and the calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (D) were evaluated for their vitamin C (ascorbic acid) content using an official methods (AOAC methods. 1980). The results obtained ranged form 40-50mg of vitamin C in 100g of powdered dried fruits; the results showed the vitamin C content of sample C > B > D > A at 49.50, 44.60, 43.20 and 39.50mg/100g of dried powdered samples respectively. Therefore, these fruits when consumed will contribute to the supply of the daily requirement of the vitamin by man
