Abstract

This study was carried out with the aim of determining the haemoparasites of cattle in Abeokuta, southwest Nigeria in order to provide information to animal owners on possible preventive measures. 200 cattle of both sexes (166 females and 34 males) were bled from which about 5ml of blood were collected from each cattle into an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) bottles.  The haemoparasites detected in stained blood films were Anaplasma spp., Babesia spp., Trypanosoma spp. and Theileria spp. Anaplasma sp was the most prevalent single infection, while infection with Anaplasma spp + Babesia spp were the most prevalent mixed infection in the studied animals. The packed cell volume (PCV %) of infected cattle (27.11 ± 6.90) was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than non-infected cattle (36.16 ± 6.15). Fifty six (28%) of the cattle sampled were positive for single infection while fourty six (23%) were positive for mixed infection.
